5 Ways to Organize Your Closet

It's completely that time of year again. That time when the summer clothes are fading into the distance and instead you're searching for those sweaters you swore you had and that one pair of jeans you haven't worn since February.

Let's make it easier on us shall we? Organizing your closet can make your mornings easier, can make putting away laundry go much quicker, and can make you feel like a million bucks. So here are 5 ways you can begin to organize your closet.

1. Edit (Get Rid of Things)

This is the easiest and also the hardest way to begin organizing your closet! We hold on to clothes that no longer fit us and then there are times where we hold on to items because they bring back fond memories. However, if your closet is getting out of control and you can't find what you need, it's time to edit.

The general rule is if you haven't worn it in a year, remove it. Still in good condition? Donate your items to a local charity or thrift shop. If it's in great condition and one of your more expensive pieces consider using apps like Poshmark to sell your items. Bonus? Cash on hand for some new seasonal items!

2. Organize by Color

I've personally been doing this since college and I wouldn't change it. By organizing my clothes by color I can easily create an outfit without having to skim the entire closet. A great bonus here is that if you live with someone who puts away your laundry it would be super hard for them to mess it up.

3. Create Categories

How do you create outfits? If it's not by color but instead by type of clothing, create categories in your closet. Perhaps all of your flannels are together, long sweaters are hung up together, and all your florals are side by side.

This is helpful when you have more several areas that your clothes are kept. For example between a closet, shelving, and a separate dresser.

4. Use All of the Space

One of the best things I've done in my closet is repurpose my old nightstands. Both nightstands have two wide drawers and I didn't want to lose that storage space. Instead, I brought both items into my closet and put them under the clothing rod. This enables me to hang clothes, use the drawers, and use the top of the dressers as extra shelving.

Use all fo the space you have. Can you create shelving in your closet? Can you use the top rack for items you barely use or to keep your shoes & hats? You can find closet organizers for sale to help you but if you get creative you can usually find items you already have to help with this.

5. Be Creative With Accessories

Are you storing al of your accessories in your closet as well? Be creative with your accessories. Allow your hats to become artwork as you find a place in your bedroom to hang them on the wall. You can use a giant carabiner to hang scarves, belts, and even purses. Have a walk in closet? Don't forget about the back of your door! You can easily use that space to hang essentials.

Don't be afraid to think out of the box!
